What to Expect During the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Process
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is about preparation and anticipation, in addition to the process itself. It is intended to set the stage for the phase of your life that you will share with your new child. The more you know about the process, the more positive an experience it will be for you.
Prior to the IVF process itself, your physical health and psychological readiness will be evaluated. The healthier you are, the better your chances of carrying and delivering a healthy baby. Your menstrual cycles will also be evaluated, to ensure that the IVF procedure is conducted at the correct time.
After the eggs have been retrieved from the egg donor, they are fertilized. After they are allowed to incubate, the fertilized eggs are prepared to be transferred into the recipient. A progesterone injection is given to help facilitate the process.
Embryo transfer does not require anesthesia. They will be transferred through your cervix by the use of a catheter. In most instances, between two and five embryos are transferred at this time. You will then lie flat and rest for a few hours. After a brief period of rest you will be able to resume your normal everyday activities. While you may experience some degree of cramping and discomfort, it is not likely to be severe.
Two weeks after the in vitro fertilization procedure, you will be checked by a fertility specialist to see if pregnancy has occurred. Your physician will also check to see if the IVF has resulted in a multiple pregnancy. You may be required to continue taking progesterone supplements for a period of time. These supplements are available in pill form, as well as by injection.
If pregnancy has been achieved, the physician will conduct a few more blood tests and ultrasounds prior to transferring you to an obstetrician. If no problems have developed, you will be well on your way to the experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
