The Risks and Benefits of Clomid

The Risks and Benefits of ClomidWhen it comes to undergoing any kind of medical treatment, it's important that you have a good understanding of the benefits as well as the risks involved with the procedure. By knowing both, you will be able to have realistic expectations about the treatment process and what it will entail.

We'd like to take this opportunity to consider one particular infertility treatment and then focus on the risks and benefits that treatment entails: Clomid.

About Clomid

Clomid is a fertility drug that is also known by the following names:

  • Clomifene
  • Clomiphene
  • Androxal
  • Omifin

Clomid is classified as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM).

Why Clomid Is Prescribed

Clomid is prescribed in order to stimulate the release of certain hormones that are necessary to trigger ovulation. This is an ideal option to consider for women who have issues with ovulation, such as not ovulating regularly, ovulating too early or too late during their cycle, or not ovulating at all. In that sense, Clomid drug both stimulates ovulation and regulates it.

Clomid can be used to assist with natural conception or to stimulate ovulation so that eggs can be retrieved for in vitro fertilization (IVF).

If a woman suffers from polycystic ovarian syndrome, Clomid may be prescribed to address the health condition. In some instances, Clomid can also be used by men to address problems with low sperm count.

When is Clomid taken?

The drug is generally taken in the first days of a woman's cycle, with ovulation occurring between days 13 and 18. If a patient does not ovulate during this timeframe, the dosage may be upped as needed.

Side Effects of Clomid

Taking Clomid may result in the following side effects:

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation
  • Nausea
  • Hot flashes
  • Pain in the abdominal area
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Mood swings
  • Headaches
  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Tender breasts
  • Bloating
  • Thick cervical mucus (this can make natural conception more difficult)

The Benefits of Clomid

Clomid is highly effective for addressing many of the problems that were listed above. With regard to natural stimulation and regulation of ovulation, patients are 80 percent likely to experience proper ovulation during the first three months of taking Clomid. Given these numbers, Clomid can allow a couple to conceive naturally without the need for additional fertility treatments.

The Risks of Clomid

Given the number of side effects listed above, there are a number of downsides to consider when taking Clomid. In very rare instances, women who take Clomid may experience hair loss. While taking Clomid, the chances of giving birth to twins goes up slightly, though the chance of having triplets does not increase.
