Providing ample information tends to improve expectations and patient satisfaction during advanced fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Knowing about the procedure and what it entail gives patients a great opportunity to prep themselves for it.

IVF is an involved process, and that is something that should not be taken for granted. By preparing for IVF treatment, you are getting your body, your mind, and your personal life ready for the process ahead. Being prepared mentally and physically can make a major difference when it comes to the final results of treatment.

#1 - Ask Questions During the Consultation Process

During your consultation with a fertility specialist, be sure to ask questions about IVF process and what it will entail. There are no bad questions or silly questions, and patients often find that expressing their concerns to a fertility specialist gives them a better understanding of what to expect.

#2 - Quit Using Tobacco Products and Limit Alcohol Consumption

Smoking, chewing tobacco, and all have negative impacts on your health and wellness. It's best to quit using all tobacco products and greatly limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages in the weeks leading into IVF.

#3 - Maintain a Healthy Diet

One way to help ensure that you are ready for IVF is eating right. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains. Avoid junk food, processed foods, and items high in saturated fat and excessive sugar.

#4 - Hydrate and Reduce Caffeine Intake

Being properly hydrated can make a lot of difference. Drink water throughout the day to remain hydrated and be sure to limit your caffeine intake as well.

#5 - Get Light Exercise Regularly

Exercising keeps your body fit and strong, and it helps you prepare for the IVF process as well. Rather than strenuous exercise, it's important to consider light-to-moderate activities, particularly yoga and pilates.

#6 - Make Sure You're Sleeping Right

A good night's rest should never be taken for granted. Be sure to get into a healthy sleep pattern/sleep cycle in the weeks leading up to your IVF treatment.

#7 - Consider Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques

Studies are conflicted about the affect that stress has on IVF success. Even then, eliminating and managing stress can make the IVF process less of a hassle and a source of worry. Exercise helps, but be sure to discuss other stress management options with your physician and/or fertility specialist.

#8 - Build a Support Network of Friends and Family

Going it alone psychologically is rarely a good idea, especially for medical treatments that involve big decisions. Make sure that you have family and friends there to support you. Confiding in them during this process can make a lot of difference when it comes to your psyche, and that might translate in a better chance at success.

#9 - Discuss the Process with Your Partner

Of course, you and your partner should have open channels of communication with one another when it comes to the IVF process. Be sure to discuss what's on your mind if something is worrying you. Talking through issues can help relieve stress.

#10 - Undergo Tests and Screenings

In the lead up to the actual IVF treatment, your fertility specialist will perform a number of tests and screenings to analyze eggs, sperm, viability for treatment, and overall health and wellness. These tests are to help ensure that your whole fertility treatment is tailored to your situation.
