How IVF Works
The first step of in vitro fertilization is ovulation induction. The woman is prescribed fertility medications to control when the eggs will become ripe, and to increase the chance of collecting several eggs during a single cycle. Ultrasound technology is used to monitor eggs as they develop. Next, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve the eggs. After sedation and local anesthesia are administered, ultrasound imaging guides Dr. Dorsett as a special needle penetrates the vaginal wall, removing eggs. Eggs are then combined with the man’s sperm in an incubator. Once it is confirmed that fertilization and cell division are taking place, the eggs become embryos.
Within one to six days, the embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus. After this step, the woman rests while waiting for early signs of pregnancy. Ultrasound and blood tests help confirm that the woman has become pregnant.
IVF Success Rates
IVF has helped many hopeful couples to have children, but it is not a guaranteed method of success. Many factors contribute to a couple’s chances of successfully conceiving if they choose to undergo IVF. The surest way to determine whether IVF can help you is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dorsett.
Though the surgical steps associated with in vitro fertilization are considered minor, all surgery involves a degree of risk, and IVF is no exception. In rare cases, ovaries can experience hyperstimulation, in which they can hurt and become swollen. Also known as Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome, this condition may also cause vomiting, loss of appetite, and nausea. In one percent of these cases, women may experience severe pain, nausea and vomiting, weight gain, and shortness of breath.
