Due Date Calculator for IVF Treatment

Couple embracing their newborn babyFor couples who suffer from infertility, fertility treatment offers hope. With advanced techniques and treatments, Dr. Janelle Dorsett and her team at The Centre for Reproductive Medicine can greatly increase the chances of a couple succeeding in conception. In particular, IVF, which is a multi-step assisted reproduction process, is greatly successful in helping patients reach their goal of parenthood. Once treatment has begun and the excitement has built up, it is only natural that patients are eager to determine their pregnancy due date. Here, we explain to our Lubbock patients how the IVF due date calculator works and how it differs from traditional pregnancy calculations.

Determining Your IVF Due Date

First and foremost, when we discuss due dates with patients, we always stress that these dates are merely estimates, and in no way a guarantee of when a child will be born. While the average gestation is 40 weeks, a healthy pregnancy may result in birth at any time between 37 and 42 weeks. Due dates are estimated based on determining what a child’s birth weight would be at the time of delivery. When determining a due date for a traditional conception, this date is based on the first day of the woman’s most recent menstrual cycle (with the due date being 40 weeks after that date). However, for women undergoing IVF treatment, that calculation is done a little differently. When determining a due date for IVF treatment, women can calculate their due date based on any of the following information:

  • The first day of the last menstrual cycle
  • The day of ovulation
  • The day of egg retrieval or insemination
  • The day of the 3- or 5-day embryo transfer

Because of the precise program that is followed during IVF treatment, most women are fairly certain of at least one of these days and, therefore, IVF due dates are often more reliable than traditional conception due dates. While there are many online calculators that can help determine a due date based on one of these pieces of information, the most accurate information will come from Dr. Dorsett, who will have an intimate knowledge of the patient’s IVF procedure.

Factors Affecting Due Dates

While IVF due dates are often more reliable than standard due dates, there are some factors that can affect the accuracy of an IVF due date. Because multiple eggs are often implanted, the chances of a multiple birth pregnancy is higher for those undergoing IVF treatment. Multiple births do not typically have a gestation period that is equal to that of a single birth. Women who are pregnant with twins are likely to give birth at 37 weeks, while triplets often come even earlier, around 33 weeks. These factors may not be taken into consideration when plugging information into an online due date calculator, but Dr. Dorsett will factor these considerations in when estimating an IVF due date for her patients.
