Happy pregnant woman sitting in grass outsideIf you are struggling with infertility, you understand what an emotional toll it can take. At The Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Lubbock, TX, we understand the challenges that come along with trying to conceive.

In addition to the wide array of treatment options available at our practice, we also want our patients to be well-informed about natural ways to boost fertility. Here, we explore a few health tips to improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Take Vitamins

It is always a good idea to eat a well-balanced diet. In addition, however, you should be taking a prenatal vitamin, one that is rich in folic acid, which helps reduce the risk of spina bifida and other defects. Ask your doctor which over-the-counter prenatal vitamin is right for you.

Reduce or Eliminate Caffeine

The chance for pregnancy is often reduced by caffeine intake. Therefore, we recommend that women avoid coffee, tea, and soft drinks. By choosing decaf instead, you will be more likely to conceive. If you cannot bear the thought of going without your morning cup of joe, limit yourself to two eight-ounce cups per day.

Quit Smoking

If you need one more reason to ditch tobacco products, here it is: Smoking increases the risk for ectopic pregnancies. This occurs when the embryo attaches somewhere outside of the uterus. It also lowers the quality and quantity of sperm, and is linked to an increased risk of miscarriage.

Review Your Medications

Certain drugs can actually decrease your chances of pregnancy. Therefore, if you are trying to conceive, gather all the medications you are taking and review them in detail with your healthcare provider. In some cases, slightly tweaking one or two medications or dosages is all that is necessary for success.

Relax and De-stress

Stress can have a significant negative effect on the body. Women who are attempting pregnancy can severely limit their chances of success when they are always tense and stressed. Therefore, it is a good idea to practice stress management and engage in relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or acupuncture.

Keep Exercise Light to Moderate

There is nothing wrong with daily exercise. However, for those trying to conceive, strenuous or excessive exercise can actually affect your menstrual cycle, therefore leading to infertility.

Have More Sex

Simply stated, the more sex you have, the more likely you are to become pregnant. In fact, some experts believe that couples should have sex once a day every other day for maximum benefit. Statistically speaking, those trying to conceive should be having sex at least two to three times per week.

In addition, patients should be mindful of what they do following sex. For example, long runs or spending time in the sauna or hot tub can raise your body temperature and decrease the chance for pregnancy. As a general rule, women should also avoid douching after sex, as it raises the risk for pelvic infections.

Use Sperm-friendly Lubricant

Many lubricants can actually reduce the chance for pregnancy. Why? Because many options cause the sperm to die before they reach the egg. If lubrication is necessary during sex, find a sperm-friendly product.
