Ovulation Induction with Timed Intercourse

Woman with a positive pregnancy testThe female reproductive system is complex. Any irregularities or malfunctions within the system can lead to fertility issues. Individuals struggling with infertility often believe that assisted reproductive treatments, like in vitro fertilization, are the only way to get past fertility issues and successfully conceive.

There are actually many treatments offered at our Lubbock, TX, fertility practice, The Centre for Reproductive Medicine. For some patients, less invasive treatments can be just as effective as IVF. Treatments such as ovulation induction stimulate the ovaries and encourage egg production. Ovulation induction with timed intercourse offers patients a more affordable and less invasive way to address common fertility issues.

The Ovulation Induction Process

Ovulation induction, which is also often referred to as ovarian stimulation, is a way for our doctors to stimulate the production and release of mature eggs in our female patients. Essentially, this process allows us to time and control a woman’s ovulation, or to encourage the production of multiple mature eggs in women who already have a regular menstrual cycle.

Ovulation induction is achieved through the use of hormone therapy. Our Lubbock patients will be prescribed a combination of fertility medication. The exact medications that are used may vary slightly for each patient. Most commonly, hormone therapy will combine the use of both oral fertility medications and injectable fertility hormones.

Timing Intercourse with Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction is often performed in conjunction with other fertility treatments, such as IVF or intrauterine insemination (IUI). However, ovulation induction with timed intercourse alone has proven a successful fertility treatment for a number of our Lubbock patients.

Ovulation induction regulates ovulation and gives our female patients a predictable menstrual cycle. Once ovulation has been regulated, patients can time intercourse to give themselves the best chance of becoming pregnant.

Following sexual intercourse, sperm can survive and meet up with an egg for fertilization for approximately five days. Because sperm can survive so long, patients often choose to have intercourse every other day during the most fertile window of ovulation. Successful conception relies largely on timing, so this method can significantly increase the chance of pregnancy.

What if Treatment Is Unsuccessful?

Even with the assistance of ovulation induction, our patients are not guaranteed to become pregnant. If ovulation induction with timed intercourse is not a success the first time around, that doesn’t mean there is no hope. It can take several cycles of ovulation induction and timed intercourse for a woman to become pregnant.

If ovulation induction with timed intercourse continues to be ineffective, it will likely be necessary to consider alternate fertility treatments. IUI and IVF are both more intensive treatments that can be successful when additional fertility concerns are present. Dr. Dorsett can discuss these procedures in further detail with those patients who require further assistance.
