It takes a very special person to consider the gift of egg donation. By agreeing to be an oocyte donor, more commonly known as an egg donor, a woman gives couples who have struggled to conceive the chance to experience the unique joys of parenthood. While it would be great if everyone with a giving heart was able to volunteer as an egg donor, there are certain requirements that must be met.
To promote the success of egg donation, fertility specialist Dr. Janelle Dorsett works with carefully screened women who meet all the egg donor requirements. Whether our Lubbock, TX, patients have a known egg donor or are in need of a donor from our donor bank, we facilitate egg donation to ensure that all donor requirements are met so that patients have the best chance of a successful egg donation treatment.
When working with egg donors, their ovarian reserve is especially important. A woman’s ovarian reserve refers to how many eggs she has remaining, as well as the quality of those eggs. Since age has one of the biggest impacts on the quality and quantity of a woman’s eggs, we need to consider the age of prospective egg donors. Egg donors should be within their most fertile window, which generally means that we work with egg donors between the ages of 21 and 31.
General Health Requirements
An egg donor’s health is of utmost importance. Egg donors obviously need to have a healthy reproductive system, but they should also:
- Maintain a weight within their ideal range
- Abstain from smoking or drug use
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
- Be free of medical conditions that could increase the risk of egg donation
Prior to accepting an egg donor, patients will meet with a general physician to discuss their medical history. They will also undergo a series of tests that give us an overview of their reproductive health and general health.
Even if an egg donor is healthy, it is important that we consider her genetics, as well as the genetic history of her family. Egg donors will have a biological connection to any baby that is born using her eggs, so we want to be sure that egg donors are free of genetic conditions that could be passed down to the child. To ensure that potential egg donors at our Lubbock fertility center meet our genetic requirements, we collect information to create a genetic family tree and we perform some basic genetic tests.
It is just as important that egg donors meet the emotional requirements of egg donation. Being an egg donor can be very rewarding, but some people may have complex feelings about having a biological connection to a child that is not theirs. Individuals who wish to become egg donors will need to undergo a psychological consultation so that we are confident they are emotionally prepared for egg donation and are committed to the process.
