Infertility Testing and Treatment at Our Lubbock Office
At the Centre for Reproductive Medicine, we offer a full range of preliminary diagnostic testing designed for our patients who are just beginning to explore their infertility treatment options. At our Lubbock practice, these tests are used to help us determine exactly what treatment option is right for you. They include:
- Complete History and Physical Exam
- Semen Analysis
- Antisperm Antibody Testing
- Sperm Morphology
- Semen Cryopreservation (freezing)
Semen analysis is the most basic of the male infertility tests performed at our Lubbock practice. It analyzes sperm quantity, motility, and morphology and overall health, as well as the volume, color, and thickness, of semen. It also tests for infection and inflammation.
Antisperm Antibody Testing
A very small number of men—4 percent—harbor anti-sperm antibodies, which can affect the ability of sperm to function properly and can trigger infertility. These antibodies are detected through semen analysis.
This type of testing determines whether sperm are shaped normally—meaning they have an oval head, a connecting middle, and a long, straight tail. If a large number of the sperm are misshapen, it will be difficult for them to fertilize a woman’s egg.
This modern method allows the sperm to be frozen for later use. In many cases, it proves to be quite successful. Thawed sperm can be helpful during in vitro fertilization (IVF) or other infertility treatments if the male partner is not going to be available at the necessary time. It is also necessary to freeze and store donated sperm prior to use.
